I HEART FOOD

by sylvia

So I was reading this yesterday, and I gotta say – THANK YOU!

When I was younger, I had a hard time with my fatness.  I was always the only “fat chick” in my group of friends.  I always compared myself to them in a negative way, even though I was the one with the healthiest eating habits.  I didn’t eat very much fast food, stayed away from red meat, etc.  Of course I smoked like a chimney and drank all the time, but that is a different story.

I always thought I should be embarrassed about my fatness.  That my fatness was the reason I didn’t have a boyfriend and wasn’t more successful in life.  It was like being fat was a curse thrust upon me – it controlled me and I was its victim.  Because of the girls I was friends with (see Girls are Bitches, Parts I & II), I felt that being fat was WRONG.

But when I separated from those chickas and learned to be OK with myself, and I felt empowered.  I realized that being fat wasn’t a curse – it was who I was/am!   I’m fat because I HEART food!  Not junk food, really, but vegetables like celery and baby corn, and polenta, and yogurt and fruit and chicken hot dogs (nitrate-free!) and apple butter on whole-grain bread.  And it’s not because I am “trying” to lose weight – that’s the kind of jank I love!

Of course, throw in some sour cream, cheese, mexican food, egg rolls and anything Thai, and I will gobble it up, but that’s because I HEART FOOD!!!!

So yes - I exercise.  I like the way it makes my body feel and look.  I like being able to show off a muscle on my arm, even if there is still a flap of flab dangling below it.  I like being able to walk up the stairs without being out of breath (ok, I’m still working on that one), but I HEART food even more!  And now I embrace the FATTY within (who is also still a FATTY on the outside!)

  1. ´Hi there… Found your blog trough Google.

Just wanted to say hi and tell you that I enjoy reding your articles / posts.

  2. You’re welcome!

The downside of my post is that people have agreed with me by listing all the foods they love, and that just makes me hungry. (WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT APPLE BUTTER BEFORE?!)

  3. Hi! and thank you!

  4. [...] think it’s any surprise that I HEART FOOD, especially since I’ve talked about it here before (and y’know – I’m a fatty).  Last night I took some clients out to dinner [...]
